General Info

Tucked along the historic street of Castlegate in Penrith, Grants Of Castlegate sits at 54 Castlegate, Penrith CA11 7HY, United Kingdom, offering a relaxed dining experience that feels both welcoming and thoughtfully curated. From the moment you arrive, the atmosphere feels easygoing and comfortable, making it a pleasant stop whether you’re exploring the town or simply looking for a reliable restaurant with a well-rounded menu.

One thing that stands out quickly is how balanced the menu feels. The kitchen leans toward classic comfort dishes while still presenting them with a touch of finesse. During my visit, the Risotto immediately caught my attention. It was rich, creamy, and perfectly cooked, delivering that satisfying depth of flavor you hope for from a good Italian-inspired plate. Not long after, the Ravioli arrived at a nearby table, and it looked just as inviting-delicate pasta filled generously and served in a way that made it clear the kitchen cares about detail.

For diners who prefer something heartier, the Rumpsteak is a strong highlight. Cooked with precision, it offers a satisfying bite and pairs nicely with the relaxed, casual vibe of the restaurant. Meanwhile, if you’re interested in something more regional, the Local Cheeses Served with Red Onion Chutney provide a lovely nod to local ingredients. The cheeses are flavorful, and the chutney adds a gentle sweetness that balances everything beautifully.

And of course, no visit feels complete without dessert. The Sticky Toffee Pudding here is one of those comforting classics that delivers exactly what you want-soft sponge, rich sauce, and just the right level of sweetness. It’s the kind of dessert that tends to appear often in reviews because guests genuinely remember it.

Beyond the food, the overall experience is designed to be accessible and relaxed. The wheelchair accessible entrance makes the restaurant welcoming for everyone, while parking nearby adds convenience for those arriving by car. Inside, the bar onsite creates a lively yet comfortable atmosphere where guests can enjoy a drink alongside their meal. The restaurant also accommodates groups, making it suitable for gatherings, casual celebrations, or dinners with friends.

For those stopping in during the day, a simple coffee can also be part of the experience. It’s the sort of place where you might begin with a drink, explore the menu at your own pace, and settle into a relaxed meal without feeling rushed.

Overall, Grants Of Castlegate feels like a reliable dining spot in Penrith where the food, service, and setting work together naturally. The location along Castlegate makes it easy to find, while the thoughtful menu and welcoming environment explain why it continues to attract both locals and visitors browsing restaurant reviews and looking for a memorable place to dine.

What customers say?

“ One of the best meals I have ever had, all of the food was rich and cooked to perfection. Despite it being a 3 course meal I left comfortably full rather than bursting at the seams. The atmosphere was lovely with good service and a comfortable feeling inside the place. I had the cheese souffle to start, the fillet steak for my main with peppercorn sauce and the dark chocolate creme brulee for dessert. Without a doubt some of the nicest food I have ever eaten, the meals were not cheap but very much worth the price. Visited on a Thursday evening, a last minute reservation was made but it is always best to phone ahead to confirm that they are still open as Wednesday and Thursday then are not particularly busy and may close early. ”

“ What a hidden gem! Grants of Castlegate completely blew us away. The food was absolutely incredible, every dish was beautifully presented and tasted just as good as it looked. You can really tell how much care and attention goes into every plate. The lady at front of house was so welcoming and friendly, which made the whole experience even more special. From start to finish it felt relaxed, thoughtful and genuinely lovely. We’re so glad we found this stunning little restaurant and will definitely be coming back. Highly recommend to anyone looking for exceptional food and a brilliant atmosphere. ”

“ Excellent food and fantastic service! This is definitely one of our top favorites for the Lake District area. We had the King Scallop and Trio of Fish for starters - both were great. For mains, the Sea Bass with lobster & crab tortellini in bisque was fabulous. The mushroom risotto was outstanding. We couldn’t help but share everything among us . The lemon meringue tart was just the perfect dessert to wrap a splendid evening. ”

“ We visited Grants of Castlegate as an anniversary treat from a family member while on a trip to the Lake District. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any nearby parking, but once inside, everything else was excellent. The service was fantastic — friendly, attentive, and welcoming — and the food was absolutely delicious, even if it was a little pricier than what we’d usually spend. The restaurant itself was clean, modern, and beautifully presented. It was very quiet during our visit, though this was likely because we dined on a Wednesday evening around 6 p.m. For a short while, we were the only guests, so there wasn’t much atmosphere, but this didn’t detract from the overall experience. The lady serving us was polite and professional, making us feel instantly welcome without hovering while we ate. We were seated toward the rear of the restaurant, which was a lovely, private spot. The dining area is split-level with a few steps between sections but still feels open and spacious. The kitchen is located on another level, and food is delivered via a small dumbwaiter — a nice touch that kept the dining area peaceful with no kitchen noise. There’s also a small bar where drinks are prepared and brought directly to the table. Overall, we really enjoyed our meal at Grants of Castlegate. It’s a modern, well-run restaurant with excellent service and beautifully prepared food — perfect for a relaxed, high-quality dining experience. ”

“ Food was excellent. I tried pan fried chicken. My wife the lamb. All beautifully cooked and artistically presented. I suddenly experienced one of my regular flare ups of pain. The staff hunted around and found me some Paracetomol. So kind! Would definitely go again. ”

“ Delicious! I have been wanting to try this restaurant a few times but could never get the timing right of when I was in town and they were open! Anyway I made it and it was lovely. I received a nice welcome and was given a cosy table for one by the radiator! I ordered the garlic chilli prawns for starter and crispy pork belly for mains. Both were tasty and plentiful. Next time I’ll be back with my hubby and we’ll crack onto the wine list! Highly recommend ”

“ The choice and quality of menu is excellent. Each dish can also be paired with a wine. This feels like a chef’s / fine dining experience without the stuffy frills. Waiting staff are also lovely. Interior needs a glow up, but don’t let that put you off! Support the local business! …PS. Great fresh kids menu too. ”

“ It is a quaint restaurant in the centre of Penrith with attentive staff & a select menu. Lovely food but not wow for the price paid. The lamb was the highlight. On a positive note no service charge added. ”
